A Night of Show Stoppers

CIU Thespians Host Musical Cabaret Theatre

By Maya Speece, CIU Student Writer (and performer!)

The Musical Theater Cabaret was a night of exciting and creative skits created by CIU’s talented students. It had everything from numbers with song and dance, to heartfelt solos, to group dance numbers.

“Sixteen Going On Seventeen” from “The Sound of Music” opened the night and set a playful tone for the performance. Each skit was chosen and prepared by the individual students who took part in it. The CIU Thespians team then organized the numbers and coordinated lighting and sound for the show.

Other colorful numbers were “Dear Theodosia” from “Hamilton,” “Kingdom Dance” from “Tangled,” “Can’t Stop Singing” from “Teen Beach Movie,” and a grand finale from the “Greatest Showman.” Such varied selections in music and tone led to an unexpected but amusing experience for the audience.

I participated in “Kingdom Dance” and had a wonderful time rehearsing and showcasing it with my friends. The Cabaret offers students an opportunity to perform a number they may have never had the opportunity to perform or be a character they have always wanted to portray.

Cierra White, treasurer of the Thespians Club, said afterward, “I think it is a fantastic opportunity for students to share their talents and be involved in theater, but do not have time to commit to an entire play.”

The audience loved it.

One audience member said, “It was so fun to see a community coming together to support each other” while another said, “It was amazing that everyone could pull together acts in their free time. Good job all!”

Some of us are already planning numbers in anticipation of another Cabaret this spring — thankful for the Thespians team, the participating students, and the wonderful audience.
