CIU Biomedical Sciences Program Awarded NIH Grant Supplement

Columbia International University’s Biomedical Sciences program is awarded a $250,000 Administrative Supplement to its existing Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This additional funding will expand CIU’s research capacity through the acquisition of advanced instruments for cell imaging and molecular analysis, strengthening both faculty research and hands-on learning opportunities for students.

Exploring Cellular Dynamics and Metabolic Regulation

Dr. Jeong-Ho Kim, professor of Biomedical Sciences and principal investigator, who leads the NIH-funded research program, explains that his research explores how nutrients and metabolites regulate cellular functions.

“By acquiring high-quality fluorescent microscopy, a multimode microplate reader, and other advanced research equipment, we can perform experiments with the precision and sensitivity needed to uncover complex cellular mechanisms. The discoveries from this work will deepen our understanding of glucose homeostasis and may help develop new strategies to manage and treat metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and cancer.”

Kim is a long-time NIH-supported scholar whose work focuses on the molecular pathways that regulate metabolism. His research exemplifies CIU’s commitment to integrating rigorous scientific training with a faith-based academic mission.

Enhancing Student Learning and Research Opportunities

Dr. David DeWitt, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, says CIU is blessed to have faculty members like Dr. Kim and highlighted the importance of the award.

“This supplemental grant will allow us to purchase state-of-the-art research equipment that enhances both our research capabilities and the educational experience of our students pursuing careers in medicine and biomedical research,” DeWitt said.

The NIH AREA program supports institutions like CIU by strengthening undergraduate research environments and preparing for the next generation of biomedical scientists. Undergraduate research is a cornerstone of CIU’s Biomedical Sciences program. Several students are currently conducting projects in the Kim Lab, exploring how nutrition and metabolism influence cellular function. Last summer, Moses Siddela, one of Dr. Kim’s students, participated in the Summer Research Program and based on his findings, successfully secured funding through the NIH-supported South Carolina INBRE program.

Mentorship and Mission

Dr. Kim provides individualized mentoring to guide students in experimental design, data interpretation, and presentation of scientific results.

“I believe undergraduate students can make meaningful contributions to science when given the right tools, guidance, and encouragement,”  Kim said.

Through dedicated mentorship, academic excellence, and support from the NIH AREA program, CIU continues to build a vibrant research environment where students grow as both scientists and servant leaders prepared to impact the world through faith and discovery.

Founded in 1923, Columbia International University is private, Christian and multidenominational. With over 3,100 students studying on campus or online, CIU specializes in Bible-centered professional development that prepares students to impact the nations with the message of Christ in ministry, missions and the marketplace.
