One-by-one 32 Columbia International University students took turns in thanking some of the people who make it possible for them and many of their classmates to attend CIU.
It was the annual CIU Partner Appreciation lunch with the theme “Oh, Magnify the Lord with Me.” The students did just that as they expressed they’re thanks to God for those assisting them financially.
Among them was Jeffrey Spurling from Honolulu, Hawaii, a pitcher for the CIU Rams baseball team. He is majoring in Bible and Sport Management with the goal being involved in sports ministry after graduation.
After sharing lunch with the donors who have made his education possible, he called the experience, “Really cool.”
“It’s different than thanking them over email,” Spurling said. “To see them in person and show your gratitude — I’m really glad I got this opportunity.”
Among the donors at the event were Michael Krigline and his wife Vivian. Michael graduated from CIU in 1999 with a Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)/Intercultural Studies while Vivian took undergraduate classes. They would go on serve in China where Michael was an English teacher for 20 years. They are happy to financially assist CIU students who are coming behind them.
“We were blessed when we were students here and we know the money is going toward a good cause,” said Michael. “It’s wonderful. It’s a great opportunity for us.”
The Kriglines assist students through the Kathy Grudier Memorial Scholarship in honor of Michael’s late sister who graduated from CIU in 1991. Grudier and her husband Ed served in Turkey for 15 years with WEC (World Evangelization for Christ).
“She went home way too soon, but we’re happy to support the scholarship started in her memory,” Michael said.
CIU President Dr. Bill Jones told the gathering that it was donors who assisted him financially as he worked on his CIU doctoral degree while married with four children, and starting a new ministry.
“It was because of five businessmen — because of their generosity … I could start and finish my degree,” Jones said. “I don’t think I thanked them enough.
“The older I’ve gotten, the more grateful I’ve become for those five men. Hopefully, they are please with their investment … They probably wonder if he’s grateful 35 years later. I’m grateful,” Jones said softly.
“And CIU is grateful for you,” Jones told the attendees.
