CIU Thespians Present “The Scarlet Pimpernel”

By Maya Speece, CIU Student Writer and “The Scarlet Pimpernel” Stage Manager

The CIU Thespians are honored to present their spring play, “The Scarlet Pimpernel”

The story is full of romance, blackmail, humor, and daring escapes. The Scarlet Pimpernel is the name of a humble English flower and the elusive savior who snatches the French aristocrats from the fate of the guillotine. His identity is only known by his closest loyal followers, who are sworn to absolute secrecy and assist in his daring rescues. As he carries out his mission, Chauvelin, a representative of the new French government, has vowed never to rest until he captures the Pimpernel. Marguerite St. Just is a smart French woman married to the idiotic Sir Percy Blakeney. During Chauvelin’s hunt, she is caught in the conflict and must decide which side she will help.

Two years ago, during her sophomore year, director Sadie Lorick fell in love with the story and recently made it her mission to bring the show to CIU.

“While the story is more obscure than popular Broadway shows, it is a timeless classic,” Lorick said. “The characters are lifelike and memorable. You feel as though you know them by the end of the show, and the actors bring them to life spectacularly!”

Leading actress, Abbey Crates (Marguerite St. Just) said, “this is my first play at CIU, and it has been an absolute joy. The cast and crew are wonderful, and the show is one of a kind.”

As stage manager for the show, it has been wonderful for me to assist in a story that I have loved for a long time. Co-Director Claire Sims calls the play “rapturous fun” and a “very fulfilling experience that I’m proud to contribute to.”

I feel the same way.

Do not miss the opportunity to see one of the original alter ego stories brought to life at CIU and support the hardworking students. The cast and crew guarantee that you will be shocked and amazed. We hope to see you this weekend at “The Scarlet Pimpernel.”

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door. The show times are:

  • Friday, the 17th at 7p.m.
  • Saturday, the 18th at 7pm.
  • Sunday, the 19th at 3p.m.
