What makes America free? Former Ohio Congressman offers answers

When former Ohio Congressman Bob McEwen describes the benefits of a free enterprise system over socialism he quotes America’s 16th president.
“We believe what Abraham Lincoln said that government should only do those things which a man cannot do better for himself. Why? Because every time we take a dollar from an individual … and run it thorough a third-party system called government, we’re in the process of making the nation poorer.”
McEwen, who served in the U.S. House or Representatives from 1981 to 1993, is today president of Council for National Policy, in Washington, D.C. advocating for limited government, traditional values and a strong national defense. He was the guest speaker for Columbia International University and Ben Lippen School business students, and also addressed a CIU Chapel service.
Pointing to a chart that outlined the benefits of less government vs. more government, McEwen challenged students to consider which type of government is better to live under; a constitutional republic or socialism.
“The greater the freedom, the greater the wealth, the greater the government, the greater the poverty,” McEwen summarized. “And politics is only a question of which direction you go on this chart.”
McEwen also addressed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying that he has regularly attended the presidential prayer breakfast in Ukraine, most recently in October, and noting that much of the prayer is for America.
“The United States is the standard for righteousness in the world,” McEwen said. “When America falters, the whole world falls apart.”
When a student asked how to specifically pray for the world situation in light of the war in Ukraine, McEwen called for wisdom for America’s leaders because the United States is “the lighthouse for the gospel.”
“Pray that we do the right thing — wise leaders, who not only protect our country, but the rest of the world, as well.”
