Singer/Songwriter Laura Story Returns to her Alma Mater for Concert
September 26, 2022
Popular Christian music artist Laura Story returns to her alma mater, Columbia International University on Nov. 4 for a Homecoming concert. Story is a 2003 graduate of CIU who grew up in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Story began her music career as the bass player for the local Christian band Silers Bald and would later gain national recognition for writing “Indescribable” which went to the top of the Christian music charts in 2004 for Christian vocalist Chris Tomlin. By 2012, her recording of “Blessings,” a song she also wrote, won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Song. She has also been honored with six Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Awards.
Story credits CIU with helping her understand and apply Scripture to her career, believing the context of ministry is ultimately less important than the motivation behind it.
“The ministry that God has called me to happens to involve microphones and being on stage,” Story said. “But the core of ministry is acknowledging that God has given each of us a story and being willing to share that story of how we’ve seen God’s faithfulness in our lives.”
One of Story’s most recent endeavors is a book titled, “So Long, Normal, Living and Loving the Free Fall of Faith.” It coincides with the release of her new single, “Hello Unknown.” Both were written during the pandemic and encourage audiences to embrace change as a part of life and find security in their faith over the familiar so that they can step into the glorious adventure God invites them to embark upon.
Story is married to Martin Elvington. They have four children. When Story is not in the recording studio or on tour, she serves as executive director of worship environments and resources at Perimeter Church in north suburban Atlanta.
Story’s CIU concert comes at the start of a year-long celebration of CIU’s 100th anniversary. A weeklong Global Mission Conference will just be ending and a weekend of Homecoming 2022 activities just beginning.
The concert is Friday Nov. 4, 2022 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Shortess Chapel. Visit www.ciu.edu/laurastory for reservations and ticket information. Columbia International University is located at 7435 Monticello Road in Columbia, two miles north of I-20.
