Bethany Rymer is making headlines in her hometown of Salisbury, North Carolina. The guard for the CIU Rams women’s basketball team didn’t start her college career with the goal of playing basketball. As a matter of fact, the nursing major, who was a basketball standout in high school, decided to run cross country at CIU, thinking the schedule and training would fit better with the demands of pursing a nursing degree.

But after some encouragement from the late CIU Athletics Director Darren Richie, and Bethany’s sister Kira, a decorated CIU athlete in volleyball, Bethany gave basketball a try. Now she is among the basketball team’s top scorers and rebounders, and every bucket Rymer scores is  in honor of Richie.
