CIU’s Jonathan Johnson answers an urgent call to coach this summer
June 22, 2022
He’s the winningest coach in the history of the Lexington County Blowfish, and glad to be back at the helm of the college summer team that represents the Columbia area.
Columbia International University Head Baseball Coach Jonathan Johnson received an urgent call from the Blowfish management to return to the team this summer after the current coach had to bow out this season.
Johnson, who played Major League Baseball for the Astros and Padres, is very familiar with some of the Blowfish roster because they also play for the CIU Rams during the regular college baseball season. Among them is Josh Hernandez who says he was surprised when Johnson walked into the Blowfish locker room.
"I always loved J," Hernandez said of his college and now summer league coach. "He gave me an opportunity when I had nowhere to go. Having him in the locker room is always a plus."
Watch this report on Johnson’s return to the Blowfish from Columbia TV station WACH FOX 57 and reporter Matthew Vereen:
“Blowfish turn to past to lead present as Johnson returns.”
