Use Theological Reflection to Address Real-World Problems

The PhD Practical Theology program at Columbia International University is perfect for you if you are passionate about examining real-world problems in order to consider how the Church can more effectively align its theology and its praxis.

Within the Practical Theology concentration, you may pursue a wide variety of research topics in areas such as Chaplaincy, Homiletics, Pastoral Theology, or Moral Theology.

Offered entirely online, this flexible program allows you to pursue your doctoral degree without leaving your career or ministry.

You’ll gain advanced research, writing, and teaching skills to contribute significantly to ecclesia scholarship, with a focus on practical application and spiritual growth.

With guidance from an experienced faculty mentor, you’ll receive academic support and will grow spiritually into a well-rounded scholar.

Whether you aspire to research, teach, write, lead, or serve, CIU equips you to make a lasting impact in the field of Practical Theology both locally and globally.

Note: In February 2022 the ATS Board of Commissioners approved a three-year experiment to offer a non-residential PhD degree as an exception to Standard 5.15, through a combination of online courses (synchronous and asynchronous) and one-on-one faculty mentoring sessions.

You will review biblical perspectives on teaching and learning, survey principles of adult education, and explore best practices of course design and development. PTH 9900 - Practical Theology Dissertation Proposal

You will engage in guided practice of Qualitative Research using one of two methodologies (Constructivist Grounded Theory or Hermeneutical phenomenology) research that will prepare you to write a doctoral dissertation in Practical Theology.
