John D. Harvey

Dr. Harvey’s classroom combines careful biblical scholarship with a commitment to spiritual formation, encouraging students to grow as both students of Scripture and servants of Christ.

For more than three decades, Dr. Harvey has taught New Testament studies, Greek, biblical theology, hermeneutics, and research methods at CIU. Students learn from a professor whose experience spans teaching, academic leadership, curriculum development, and pastoral ministry. Before becoming Ph.D. Program Director, he served in a variety of seminary leadership roles, including Academic Dean, Associate Dean, Director of Academic Programs, and Interim Dean. His years of service have given him a unique perspective on preparing students for ministry, scholarship, and lifelong learning.

Dr. Harvey’s research focuses on the New Testament, particularly the writings of the apostle Paul, the Gospel of Matthew, biblical theology, and the relationship between oral communication and Scripture in the early church. He is the author of numerous books, including commentaries on Acts and Romans, works on New Testament interpretation, and resources designed to help pastors, students, and ministry leaders understand and teach the Bible more effectively. His scholarship reflects a desire to make biblical studies both academically rigorous and practically relevant for the life of the church.

In addition to his academic work, Dr. Harvey is an ordained teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church in America and has served churches in pastoral and preaching ministries both in the United States and internationally. His ministry experience helps students connect biblical truth to real-world ministry challenges and opportunities.

Outside the classroom, Dr. Harvey enjoys investing in future Christian leaders through teaching, mentoring, writing, and service to the broader evangelical scholarly community. His goal is that every student leaves his courses with a greater love for God’s Word, a deeper commitment to Christ, and the tools needed to serve the church faithfully wherever God calls them.
