Dr. Larry R. Wagner, longtime professor of Counseling at Columbia International University, entered the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 16, 2025, at 4:30 a.m. He was a cherished teacher, counselor, colleague, and friend whose steady faith and compassionate presence shaped generations of students and ministers around the world.
A graduate of Wheaton College (B.A.), George Mason University (M.Ed.), and recipient of a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University, Dr. Wagner served on the CIU faculty for more than two decades. His teaching embodied the university’s mission to prepare students who think, care, and serve with biblical excellence. Known for his depth of insight and quiet wisdom, he invested deeply in the personal and spiritual formation of his students — helping them integrate counseling skill with Christ-centered character.
In addition to his classroom ministry, Dr. Wagner counseled pastors, missionaries, and community leaders, modeling the same grace and authenticity he urged others to extend in their own ministries. His book, Help Me Help Others: Practical Ways to Build Healthy Relationships, reflected his heart for relational wholeness and his conviction that Scripture provides the foundation for true personal and interpersonal growth.
Larry was known for his thoughtful conversations, his dry wit, and his profound love for the Lord. Colleagues often said that when he spoke, people listened — because his words carried both truth and compassion. His life was marked by humility, scholarship, and a shepherd’s heart.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Wagner, his children, Dana and Ben, and one grandchild, Shep. A memorial service will be held at Gateway Baptist church, date and time TBD.
