Description

Columbia Biblical Seminary invites applications for a Professor of Theology and Church History to join our faculty. We seek a dedicated scholar with expertise in historical and systematic theology, particularly in the development of Christian thought, ecclesial traditions, and their contemporary significance. This position includes teaching graduate-level courses in theology and church history, serving as Associate Director of the PhD in Theological Studies program, and mentoring students in both academic and ministerial formation. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute actively to scholarly research and publication while also engaging in service to the seminary and the broader theological community. The ideal candidate will foster an intellectually rigorous and faith-driven learning environment, equipping students for thoughtful theological reflection and effective ministry. Position pending budget approval.

Responsibilities

  • Classroom instruction: Demonstrate excellence in classroom teaching and clinical supervision, including proficiency in residential and online instructional technology.
  • Student relationships: Advise graduate students regarding university requirements and career opportunities. Mentor students and foster student-faculty relationships by participating in student functions and small groups as appropriate. Provide mentorship and support for doctoral dissertations.
  • Institutional representation: Work with the Admissions office to represent SSC to target audiences focused on future ministers of the gospel, representing CIU to the community at large.
  • Professional engagement: Participate in professional associations, research, and scholarship that support the professional discipline(s) taught.
  • Personal growth: Model Christ-like character and conduct; exhibit growth in areas of personal challenge.
  • Program evaluation: Collaborate with colleagues in the utilization of best practice knowledge in curriculum development, classroom instruction, and student supervision. Collect, retain, and disseminate course and program data for accrediting bodies and to maintain professional standards.
  • Associate Director of Theological Studies: Teach two PhD seminars, follow up on all inquiries and applications, review application packets and participate in admission interviews, serve as primary academic advisor for students in the concentration, track individual student progress each semester, track student registrations each semester, contacting and reminding as necessary, track completion of research language requirements, track completion of conditional acceptance requirements, and follow up with inactive students each semester.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the discipline areas of theology and church history.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of residential and online instructional technology and course development.
  • Skilled in public speaking, teaching, and written communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of core courses in theology and church history.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teamwork and a collegial model of decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and integrate faith, spirituality, and biblical knowledge and content to the teaching profession.
  • Experience in church-related ministry preferred
  • Commitment to cross-cultural ministry (some cross-cultural ministry experience preferred)
  • Graduate level teaching experience preferred
  • Earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in theological studies.
