Description

The resident director supports all aspects of residence life at CIU with the goal of “helping students to thrive in Kingdom community.” The resident director position is unique in some respects in that it is an ‘on call’ position, affording the Residence Life department a sustained relational presence on campus with the goal of excellent accessibility and accountability for our resident students.

Responsibilities

  • Be available to direct resident students in matters related to residence life, maintaining a high level of visibility and accessibility on campus (especially in the residence halls).
  • Support resident assistants in effectively fulfilling their responsibilities by providing ongoing supervision and coaching.
  • Confront students when judgment, attitude or behavior is not in alignment with biblical or institutional standards, exercising discipline, when necessary, in accordance with departmental and institutional policies/procedures (consulting with the Dean of Students regarding more serious disciplinary matters).
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for Residence Life in addressing student conduct issues and emergencies, working with Campus Security in the event of fire drills, weather emergencies and other incidents. The resident director has on-call rotation duties.
  • Collaborate with the Residence Life staff and Dean of Students in the planning and execution of residence life training and retreats each semester.
  • Collaborate with the director of university housing regarding environmental needs in the residence halls.
  • Collaborate with the Residence Life staff and Dean of Students in the planning and execution of campus activities related to residence life. Delegate programming tasks to residence life sub-teams, supporting, coaching and contributing as necessary/helpful.
  • Meet weekly with the Dean of Students for review, support, guidance, accountability and prayer in regard to professional responsibilities.
  • Assist with the selection, training, evaluation, and primary supervision of resident assistants.
  • Meet weekly with the Residence Life team (women’s resident director, resident assistants) both corporately and individually to ensure team cohesion and a uniform approach to Residence Life.
  • Meet regularly with the Student Life team regarding ongoing policy and and operation.
  • Assist in monitoring the overall condition of residence halls and furniture, informing Physical Plant of needed repairs and submitting proposals as needed for improvement projects, furniture replacement, etc.
  • Attend formal functions of university life.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Strong Christian character and ministry.
  • Ability to relate effectively to students of differing ages and cultural backgrounds. The resident director’s general engagement with students has a significant impact on student life that is essential to Residence Life’s mission to “help students thrive in Kingdom community.”
  • Ability to collaborate well with a team of colleagues.
  • Capacity to make quick, biblically sound decisions.
  • Excellent understanding of and commitment to biblical truth and principles related to Christian discipleship and discipline.
  • Willingness to appropriately and graciously confront students when necessary; skill in determining degree and extent of corrective action needed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to sensitive information and student and student records.
  • Ability to respond with composure in a variety of challenging situations.
  • Strong skills in leadership coaching, counseling and event planning/programming.
  • Good oral and written communication skills. Savvy with social media preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of institutional policies, including information outlined in the CIU Student Handbook and Residence Life Handbook. (Training will be provided upon hire.)
  • Ability to manage large groups in both indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Required to live in the men’s residence hall.
  • Must be able to lift without injury up to 50 pounds.
  • CPR/First-Aid certification required. (Training will be provided upon hire.)
  • Previous residence life experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
