Description

The Learning Commons Student Worker supports the daily operations of the Learning Commons by providing excellent customer service at the Library Service Desk and front-line IT Help Desk support. This position plays a vital role in creating a welcoming, efficient, and academically supportive environment for students, faculty, and staff while upholding the mission and values of the university.

Responsibilities

1. Library Service Desk Assistance
  • Greet and assist library patrons with courtesy and professionalism.
  • Guide patrons in locating library materials, including books, journals, and digital resources.
  • Assist patrons with library databases, research inquiries, and all library equipment, including copiers, scanners, and printers.
  • Process check-out and check-in of library materials accurately.
  • Help maintain an organized, welcoming, and respectful library environment.
2. IT Help Desk Support
  • Troubleshoot common technology issues such as printer problems, Wi-Fi connectivity, and password resets; escalate complex issues to the university’s IT department when necessary.
  • Create ID badges for students, staff, and faculty.
  • Apply credit to student print balances following appropriate payment-handling procedures.
  • Offer guidance on accessing and using university-provided digital resources and learning management systems.
  • Collaborate with library staff and IT professionals to improve services and technical support processes.
Work Schedule & Supervision
  • Work schedule is dependent on team hours and availability.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Reports to the Head of Public Services.
  • Receive training in library systems, customer service protocols, and basic IT troubleshooting.

Qualifications

  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot minor IT issues and provide clear, patient instructions.
  • Familiarity with library systems and academic research tools is a plus.
  • Ability to maintain a professional, respectful, and approachable demeanor in a Christian academic setting.
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Must maintain confidentiality of student and institutional records in accordance with FERPA and university policies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Desired GPA: 3.5
  • Desired Class Standing: Sophomore or Junior

Physical & Technical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
