Description

A special education teacher is a professional who works with students who have learning differences. The special education teacher will provide one-on-one and small group instruction and will support students in both the general classroom setting and the resource classroom setting.  The special education teacher will develop teaching plans, collaborate with parents and other staff members, modify learning materials, and assess students’ progress to help them achieve important learning milestones.

Responsibilities

  • Develop teaching plans according to each student’s learning needs
  • Search for activities and resources that can be adapted to each child’s educational requirements
  • Seeks and communicates strategies for teachers to support the learner in a classroom setting
  • Collaborate with school counselors, therapists, teachers, and parents to help children develop and socialize
  • Collaborate with parents and school staff to track student’s progress
  • Modify learning materials to ensure students can access instruction at an achievable level
  • Collect and interpret data to keep track of and reflect on students’ progress
  • Monitor children’s behavioral patterns and arrange appropriate interventions if needed
  • Find engaging activities to teach skills
  • Manage classroom crises and resolve conflict
  • Prepare students for transitions to the next grade and future plans after high school
  • Inform parents about their children’s performance and potential problems
  • Coach other professionals who work with children with disabilities
  • Collaborate with the faculty and staff to create holistic intervention plans

Qualifications

  • Good knowledge of best practices in special education methodologies.
  • Experience with creating individualized education plans for students (such as IEPs).
  • Experience with data collection, management, and interpretation.
  • A patient, resourceful and resilient personality.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience working with children with a wide range of disabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a diverse international community and strong cross-cultural skills.
  • Be of strong Christian faith in addition to the aforementioned academic expectations and qualifications. Have a passion for serving children and families through the high calling of Christian education.
  • Bachelor’s degree in special education, certification in special education is preferred
