Shannon Nichols

Shannon Nichols directs the general education of Mathematics at Columbia International University. With more than 30 years of experience teaching mathematics in secondary and postsecondary settings, she is committed to helping students build confidence in mathematics and develop the quantitative reasoning skills needed for success in academic, professional, and everyday settings.

Professor Nichols’ courses are designed to help students see mathematics as a practical and valuable tool rather than simply a graduation requirement. She is passionate about helping students overcome math anxiety by creating a supportive learning environment where conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and real-world applications are emphasized. By integrating research-based teaching strategies with technology, she encourages students to collaborate, solve meaningful problems, and recognize the relevance of mathematics across a wide range of disciplines.

While completing her undergraduate and graduate studies at North Carolina State University, Professor Nichols interned in industry, where she experienced firsthand how mathematics is used to solve complex, real-world problems. These experiences inspired her to pursue a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and continue emphasizing the practical applications of mathematics throughout her teaching career.

She has taught mathematics in both North Carolina and South Carolina. Her last assignment prior to CIU was directing an AP Calculus AB/BC program, mentoring students as they prepared for college-level mathematics and advanced study.

Outside the classroom, Professor Nichols enjoys spending time with her husband, Dan, and their four grown children. She values an active lifestyle and especially enjoys spending time outdoors, where experiencing God’s creation renews her energy and refreshes her spirit.
