Assistant Dean of Spiritual Formation

The Assistant Dean of Spiritual Formation will lead and facilitate the spiritual formation and development of students through an effective Christ-centered chapel program and developmental initiatives campus wide. In addition, this position serves to advance the personal growth of students in the areas of spiritual, physical, and interpersonal development. The Assistant Dean will develop new opportunities to enhance worship and discipleship, as well as small group experience, including counseling, mentoring, and community building. This position calls for extensive collaboration with the Student Life team and all campus constituencies to provide a comprehensive approach to spiritual formation and student development. 

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary coordinator for all aspects of spiritual formation for the campus community including chapel, discipleship, retreats, conferences, and service opportunities.
  • Connect with chapel speakers (assigned by President) and coordinate hosting logistics for out-of-town speakers.
  • Responsible for the ongoing development, management, assessment and expansion of programs and services that promote spiritual formation of the student body, faculty, and staff.
  • Provide pastor counseling to students and help maintain the spiritual pulse of the campus.
  • Provide support to students and families in emergency situations.
  • Serve as a liaison with groups and organizations, pastors, and on-campus student groups (SGA, student organizations community groups).
  • Supervise student volunteers within the office of Student Life.
  • Work with the Dean of Students/Associate Dean of Students with departmental reports and budget.
  • Serve as chapel presider and aid the chapel team in selection of worship songs and the flow of chapel programs.
  • Maintain chapel attendance by working with the office manager to keep accurate attendance records.
  • Assist when needed with the discipline of students in areas where judgement, attitude or behavior causes concern.
  • Refer students to professional counseling as needed.
  • Meet with faculty and staff concerning students and their academic and personal progress.
  • Support university activities and special events, including sporting events through attendance and/or participation.
  • Communicate an accurate image of the university to the public; serve as a positive and active leader of the university, available to address impromptu situations involving the university during nontraditional hours.

  • Ability to relate personally to a diverse group of students with different cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to create and maintain discipleship programs. 
  • Ability to make good decisions. 
  • Good counseling skills.
  • Skill in determining the degree of discipline needed case to case.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Solid communication skills.
  • Flexible in work schedule to meet the student needs as needed. 
  • Ability to lead worship songs and facilitate a student-led chapel team.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Proven practical ministry skills.
  • Ability to effectively reach and teach a diverse student body.
  • Spiritually mature Christian in agreement with the college statement of faith and committed to the mission and vision of the university.
