Description

The human resources director guides and manages the overall human resources functions for the entire university including Ben Lippen School.  The director designs, implements, and oversees human resources policies, procedures, programs, budgets, general control methods, records, and files as required by law and for effective human resources operations, conducting research into human resources laws, programs, and activities, and recommending changes or innovations when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Administers and oversees the comprehensive compensation system including the position description, analysis/evaluation, benchmarking of positions, and salary determination. Calculates salaries for all positions in the University, and provides general oversight of Ben Lippen’s salaries.
  • Oversees payroll and benefits through payroll and benefits manager in the development, implementation, and maintenance of employee salary, benefits, and services programs.
  • Coordinates and participates in the requisition, recruiting, screening, interviewing, selecting, and hiring of properly qualified employees. Interviews all candidates for regular full and part time positions before clearance to hire can be given.
  • Develops, coordinates, and assists in employee orientation, training, development, performance appraisal, promotion, transfer, disciplinary, and separation processes and programs.
  • Trains and advises supervisors concerning legal compliance, personnel policy, and supervision.
  • Assists in keeping employees informed of human resources policy and legal and institutional changes that impact the employment relationship. Advises employees concerning human resources policies, out placement, and personal work-related issues.
  • Works with management, supervisors, and employees in resolving conflicts and complaints. Oversees the grievance/appeal process.
  • Serves as a liaison with legal counsel on personnel issues and compliance with human resources laws.
  • Edits and maintains the Employee Handbook and the Supervisors’ Policy Manual and related forms, ensuring that the institution’s employment, employee relations, human resources, and equal opportunity policies and practices comply with the applicable provision of federal, state, and municipal laws, including the maintenance of necessary files and documentation.
  • Chairs human resources committee and attends or serves on committees, task forces, and faculty meetings that relate to or have impact on human resources and its mission and duties.

Qualifications

  • Must have proven Christian character and spiritual maturity.
  • Must be able to research information and analyze data to arrive at valid conclusions, recommendations, and plans for action.
  • Skills in planning, organizing, systematizing, implementing, and supervising are essential.
  • Must have proven proficiency in negotiating, problem solving, persuading, conflict resolution and advising with tact and diplomacy. Must be able to inspire good will and cooperation, have mature judgment and good decision-making skills, and proven ability to handle with integrity confidential and sensitive information.
  • Must be able to prepare reports, correspondence, job announcements, etc., design and edit documents and forms, and present ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Must have good knowledge and understanding of human resources law.
  • Must have advanced knowledge and proficiency in use of computer applications, particularly, spreadsheets, word processing, databases.
  • Must be able to meet frequent deadlines and follow through on large volumes of requests and details.
  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in the field of business or human resources management.
  • At least five years of experience in one or several of these areas: human resources management, business management, career counseling, planning and placement, student personnel services, labor relations, recruitment or higher education administration.
