Description

The school nurse’s primary purpose is to address the health care needs of all Ben Lippen students during the school day and to address the health care needs of the boarding students during after school hours (nights and weekends) as well. The school nurse oversees general health issues that affect the student body, faculty and staff during school hours.

Responsibilities

Manage the Monticello Road day student health care needs that occur during school hours, including assessing ill and injured students and giving medical aid as needed, dispensing daily and as-needed prescription medications, and educating students about health issues. Being available to the St. Andrews Road (SAR) Elementary staff by telephone and email to assist in meeting the health care needs of the SAR students.
Manage the health care needs of the boarding students during and after school hours (nights and weekends) including (a) assessing ill and injured students at school and giving medical aid as needed, (b) making medical appointments, (c) taking students to the doctor/hospital, (d) filling prescriptions, (e) making house calls, (f) arranging for completion of immunizations, (g) reviewing health insurance claims, (h) processing medical bills, and (i) communicating with the houseparents about the students’ medical issues.
Purchase medical supplies to (a) stock the health room, (b) assemble medical kits for the resident houses, (c) assemble first-aid kits for school-sponsored trips, and (d) assemble first-aid bags for the classrooms.
Comply with state law regarding immunization requirements for students by maintaining accurate and complete immunization records on each student and submitting a yearly immunization report to the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) indicating the school’s compliance.
Maintain student medical records by (a) reviewing the RenWeb Student Medical and Emergency Contact form on each student and communicating with parents if information is incomplete, (b) ensuring that all students have health insurance listed in RenWeb or that the parents have a signed waiver on file in the health room if no insurance, (c) keeping a daily log documenting student visits to the health room, (d) keeping an individual medication log on each student receiving prescription medication at school, and (e) printing RenWeb medical forms for teachers to take on off-campus trips.
Maintain and oversee the automated external defibrillators (AED’s) on both campuses by replacing pads and batteries as needed, doing monthly checks on each device, and documenting maintenance.
Meet with parents and teachers of students with acute or chronic health problems (i.e. diabetes, epilepsy) to assist parents in communicating with teachers about the medical needs of these students during school.
Manage emergency medications (i.e. EpiPens, asthma rescue inhalers) for affected students by notifying parents when medications are due to expire, sending such medications on field trips, and communicating with teachers about affected students.
Educate faculty and staff about pertinent medical issues that affect them (i.e. Bloodborne pathogens) or their students (i.e. anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy).
Perform student urine drug testing as requested.
Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Ability to do a head-to-toe physical assessment, including vital signs, document findings, and determine medical course of action.
Ability to dispense medications, over-the-counter and prescription types, including use of EpiPens and inhalers.
Ability to perform blood glucose testing and urine drug testing.
Ability to perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and use an AED.
Proficiency in use of computer, including email, MS Office Word, and RenWeb School Management System.
Ability to discuss emotional and mental health issues with children and adolescents.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Ability to organize tasks and work independently.
Current RN license from the South Carolina State Board of Nursing.
American Heart certification in Healthcare Provider CPR and AED.
Two years of recent active nursing experience with direct patient care required, with at least one year of experience working with children and adolescents.
Graduate of an accredited registered nurse (RN) program with an associate degree (ADN) or a bachelor’s degree (BSN).
