Pastoral Ministries Major

• Does the program deal with the various tasks in ministry such as visitation, baptisms, the Lord's supper, and counseling?

  All of these areas are covered in the curriculum. In addition, we cover such topics as ordination, leadership, finances, special services like weddings and funerals, and the planning and implementation of mission and evangelism programs.

• I've never preached a single sermon; will I be able to preach and teach like my pastor?

  The program provides an effective method for preparing and presenting a biblical message. Students have opportunities to gain experience through their preaching classes and field education assignments. Those who come to CIU with previous preaching experience have a chance to sharpen their skills under the guidance of an experienced faculty.

• My friend who graduated from another school took Greek but now never uses it; will Greek help me in my future ministry?

  The Greek courses in the program are designed to be practical. We want students to use Greek in their Bible study and sermon preparation for the rest of their lives. With that goal in mind, we emphasize practical methods and the effective use of study tools.

• Will I have a chance to put what I learn into action?

  Every semester, CIU students are involved in field education in which they actively participate in serving the Lord. Students not only learn about ministry, they learn in ministry. Also, a vital component of the Pastoral Ministries major is the internship program which allows the student to function in an actual church setting.

• Will this program prepare me for graduate work at a seminary?

  Our graduates consistently report that they found themselves well prepared for their studies in seminary. Their training in the Bible, in Greek, and in preaching and teaching puts them a step ahead when they enter seminary.
