Why Study English at CIU?
For Columbia International University, the English program is a direct outworking of CIU’s motto “To know Him and to make Him known.” You will study the writings of poets and novelists, journalists and biographers through the lens of Scripture, mindful that all truth is God’s truth.
The English program focuses on intellectual development through reading, writing, and critical thinking, as it prepares you for effective use of the written word in a variety of careers, ministry opportunities and graduate studies. Surveys show that 20 percent of those in management positions in the United States are English majors.
Your career prospects as an English major are expanding with globalization. Due to changing demographics, school districts and employers need English majors to assist non-native English speakers in achieving greater fluency in the language. Plus an English degree combined with courses from the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) program prepares you to teach English in countries where it is in much demand.
