Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of the Psychology program is to develop students to research and address the mental, emotional, relational, and spiritual growth needs of people in clinical, academic, and church/mission settings.

In addition to the mission statement, general objectives, and requirements of the college, the objectives of the Psychology program are as follows:

  • Enable students to evaluate psychological paradigms by the authority of Scripture, helping them to precisely articulate a biblically consistent and empirically powerful model of human psychology
  • Enable students to understand the scientific foundations of empirical research and the biological foundations of psychological experience
  • Help students to foster the spiritual, mental, emotional, and relational growth of themselves and others through practical exposure and training in outside agency work. Prior instruction in mental health diagnosis and treatment is included, as is instruction in professional ethics and prohibiting (among other things) “dual role” relationships that interfere with therapeutic progress.

Opportunities: 
  • We teach the required sequence of courses for graduate study, and we teach those courses rigorously, so that every student who wants to go onto graduate school, and become a licensed Psychologist or Professional Counselor, will likely get that chance.  Many of our former CIU Psychology students are now licensed, practicing professionals, or are well on their way to achieving those professional credentials and practice opportunities –  either for secular or Christian agencies, either here in the USA or overseas.    
  • Emerging right out of our Psychology Program, our students find themselves employable as County Case Workers.  As they care for vulnerable individuals, our former Psychology students receive a competitive starting salary and a county benefit package. 
  • Several of our students have worked with special needs children, and/or worked as “line staff” for large hospitals and treatment centers. 
  • Our students have worked in churches as Pastors, and as Christian Counselors for missionary “member-care” teams. 
  • A number of our students have gone into business-related fields, and have become Personnel Officers, CFOs, and VPs of large corporations.  They find that their background in Psychology helps them to do their work – nearly every day. 
  • A number of our students have become Social Workers, including International Social Workers who rescue women and children from the international sex slave trade. 
  • Some of our former Psychology students have even become Lawyers who specialize in maintaining our religious liberties. 
  • We also welcome into the Psychology Program those who desire to use the training to become an effective parent and/or ministry partner.  
  • No matter which direction(s) students head in after college, we believe our Psychology Program will help them to understand the individuals around them, and help them to accomplish their life goals and divine callings.
