Do I need to be a linguist in order to be a qualified English language teacher?

No.  However, teacher certification usually requires some linguistic knowledge.  Teacher certification agencies (varies from state to state) sometimes require one course in linguistics and one course in syntax. To meet these criteria, our program includes Linguistics 1 and English Syntax.
