Cashing in on Selfies

Katie Perry's contest entry.

Two Columbia International University students know how to make a selfie pay off. Katie Perry and Joy Law each earned a $25 textbook scholarship by submitting a selfie to the Textbook Scholarship Contest sponsored by Akademos, Inc., an education technology company offering bookstore services.

To participate in the contest, students posed with their favorite book and submitted their self-taken photos with a creative caption to Facebook. After uploading their #BookShelfie — a play on the word “bookshelf” and the social media “selfie” trend — students encouraged friends and family to vote for their entry. The #BookShelfie with the most votes at the end of the contest period was the grand prize winner. The next two in line were announced as runners-up. Six students, including Perry and Law, received honorable mentions, awarded for the individuality and creativity of their photo.
