Description

The Controller provides overall leadership for the Accounting department’s operations; exercises responsibility for the accuracy of financial data and reports; and promotes the safeguarding of the university’s assets through the maintenance of adequate internal controls.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the Accounting department by planning, assigning, and directing their work; investing in their professional development; and coordinating the continual improvement of their practices.
  • Directs monthly ledger closing process, including posting of all closing entries, completion of ledger account reconciliations, and maintenance of all supporting documentation.
  • Ensures that adequate internal control procedures are fully documented and are in place and operating effectively to safeguard assets and produce reliable financial information.
  • Manages internal and external financial reporting (GAAP financial statements; Form 990; management reporting; financial data analyses).
  • Oversees student billing, financial aid posting, payment processing and account collection activities
  • Supports the budget process through generation of departmental expenses reports, transaction detail, personnel schedules, and other data as necessary for development of departmental operating budgets. 
  • Coordinate all activities related to annual financial statement audit, including audit schedule preparation, documentary support, internal control documentation, principal liaison with audit team, support and preparation of annual report.
  • Supports financial data requirements for periodic accreditation reporting
  • Coordinates with Treasury department on cash management processes.
  • Monitor and report quarterly investment activity within the endowment and other investments.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CIU’s biblical and community life and doctrinal standards, mission and goals.
  • Proven supervisory skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and higher education fund accounting procedures; proven financial reporting experience.
  • Strong abilities in analysis, clear presentation of financial data, communication, and precision.
  • Proficiency in the use of accounting software, relational database programming, and Microsoft Office (particularly Excel).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • Five years of experience in accounting and financial reporting, ideally within a non-profit higher education environment.
