M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Foreign Languages (TESOL)

• Do I need to be a linguist in order to be a qualified English language teacher?

  No.  However, teacher certification usually requires some linguistic knowledge.  Teacher certification agencies (varies from state to state) sometimes require one course in linguistics and one course in syntax. To meet these criteria, our program includes Linguistics 1 and English Syntax.

• Do you offer summer or online courses?

  Yes, a limited number of education courses are offered on campus during summer intensives as well as online during the fall and spring terms.

• How long does it take to complete the program?

  The program can be completed in 12 months or more, depending on the needs of the student.

• Is financial aid available?

  Financial aid, including scholarships, grants, and loans, is available. The first step in applying is to submit the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Please contact a Financial Aid counselor at (803) 807-5036 to discuss any questions.

• With this degree, can I teach in the United States? Can I teach overseas and serve as a missionary at the same time?

  Yes, this degree prepares graduates to teach in K-12 classrooms in Christian schools, International schools, and English Language Institutes worldwide. Upon completing this program, students can be recommended to receive Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) K-12 certification in TESOL. Students will also be exposed to adult learner strategies within some of the coursework and therefore are prepared to teach adults should that be required.
