M.Div. (Bible Exposition)

Must I relocate to the Columbia area to complete this degree?

No.  This degree and concentration can be completed through our Access CIU program.  This will allow you to maintain your current ministry or employment while doing distance education courses and intnesive on-campus courses.  Ordinarily, this will require a minimum of five years.

What scheduling options are available for those who live within commuting distance?

Courses offered during regular semesters are usually taught once a week during the day, in the evening, or on selected weekends. We also offer one-week intensive courses during January and during the summer months. Online courses are also available. Not all courses are available in every format every semester but there is considerable scheduling flexibility.

Can courses be transferred in from other seminaries?

Yes. Up to one-half of your courses can be transferred in from other accredited seminaries. These courses must be compatible with the CIU SSM curriculum.

Will this degree prepare me for doctoral studies?

Yes. The M.Div. degree is the prerequisite for the Doctor of Ministry, the highest professional degree in the pastoral field. If, on the other hand, you desire to pursue Ph.D. work in a biblical or theological discipline, then you should consider our M.Div. (Academic Ministries) degree. Our M.Div. graduates have done well in both kinds of doctoral programs.

Is this degree my best option if I want to be a pastor?

Yes. The M.Div. degree exposes the student to a broad range of disciplines relevant to pastoral ministry. The Bible Exposition concentration includes additional emphasis in teaching and preaching. Many denominations and local churches require or expect the M.Div. for ordination.
