A freestanding 12.5 hour TEFL certificate is available to students who meet certain admission requirements. Please contact the TEFL program director or Graduate School Admissions for further information.
Currently Intercultural Studies core courses and one TEFL core course are offered in the summer. All other courses are offered only in the fall and spring semesters.
Non-native speakers of English can do well in TEFL. To begin this degree program, however, you must satisfy standard admission requirements and attain a minimum score of 600 on the paper-based TOEFL or 250 on the computer-based TOEFL.
The TEFL classroom focuses on communication; it is quite different from tenth grade English. Nevertheless, it's wise to work on your knowledge and use of English as a role model for your students. We'll help you learn how to teach English in creative ways that bring results.
